How to Stay on Track with Your Healthy Eating Plan This 4th of July

We often fear attending parties and celebrations, such as the 4th of July, because we think that we will inevitably stray from eating healthy. However, it is important that you know this isn't necessarily true.  You can be in control of your diet, and still enjoy a delicious meal without feeling guilty, or putting on extra pounds.

The following tips will help you follow your diet plan during this holiday:

How to Stay on Track with Your Healthy Eating Plan This 4th of July
  • Avoid fried or high-fat dishes.
  • Choose more fruit and/or vegetable-based dishes.
  • When planning your menu, try to select meat/poultry recipes that have been prepared using healthy cooking methods, such as grilling, baking or steaming.
  • Remember to replace sugar with an artificial sweetener when possible.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages, and if you have any, do so in moderation. Like many other widely-consumed beverages, they are high in “empty calories” (which means they are full of calories and few nutrients, if any).
  • Watch your serving sizes! Remember it is important to eat in moderation. You can try the different dishes in the menu, as long as you keep an eye on your serving sizes.

By following these tips, you will see that  it is possible to enjoy holidays and other celebrations while keeping your diet and exercise routine in control. All it takes is a positive attitude and a little discipline!
