Think Health Rather than Pounds

Don’t be a prisoner to the bathroom scale. It's better to get used to the idea of a weight that represents health, rather than obsessing about a number on the scale.

People generally pay too much attention to the numeric value of their weight. Many even make the mistake of talking about their ideal weight according to standardized tables based on their height. It shouldn't be this way. More important than achieving some perfect number, is reaching and maintaining a weight that is healthy for you. A healthy weight makes us look great and allows us to feel better.  It helps us to remain disease-free, and to manage lasting health conditions such as diabetes or hypertension.

Think Health Rather than Pounds

MyDiet suggests that you visit your doctor or a specialized dietitian. With professional help, you can find out your healthy weight. It may or may not be the same as other people of your same height. Once you discover the weight that's right for you, it's important to learn the correct method to measure your weight.

To help you with this process, we offer the following suggestions:

  • Correctly gauge the weight scale and set it at 0.
  • Weigh yourself in the morning before having any food or water.
  • Wear as few clothes as possible and no shoes.
  • Stand up straight on the scale. Any movements may affect the correctness of the measurement. If you're using a bathroom scale, it might be easier for another person to read your weight so you don't have to bend forward.
  • Remember that your weight changes from one day to the next. You should weigh yourself three days in a row and average the readings on the scale.
  • Remember that a woman's weight varies a lot due to swelling from her menstrual period.

Remember, healthy weight is not the fad of the day. It’s a goal for the rest of our lives. That's why it doesn't matter how much time it takes to get to it. The important thing is to start to value your healthy weight now. Make an effort every day to reach it and maintain it.
