The quantity of food we eat isn’t always what causes us to gain weight. Sometimes it is our response to that constant craving for sweets that prevents us from maintaining a healthy weight. Many people eat as a response to certain feelings, such as anxiety, instead of eating because we are actually hungry.
The cause of sweets cravings can vary widely, but some of the most common reasons are: hormonal imbalances, unhealthy dieting, and various eating disorders. The sugar in the sweets we eat can help our bodies re-establish hormone levels, and this produces a pleasant sensation in the body.
However, cravings for sweets can be minimized by following these tips:
- Eat a balanced diet.Eating a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will help you reduce your body’s desire for something sweet.
- Make smart selections. It is common for sweets cravings to strike during the afternoon. Select healthy choices, such as frozen fruit, granola bars, whole wheat crackers, or seeds.
- Drink enough water.Sometimes our bodies ask for liquids, but thirst can become hunger if we don’t satisfy this need.
- Eat at the same time every day.Having constant eating hours helps keep blood glucose levels normal. When sugar levels decrease, it is more likely you’ll get that sweets craving.
- Exercise.Exercising produces a relaxing and satisfying effect that not only helps you achieve a healthy weight, but also decreases feelings of anxiety.
