Can I breastfeed my baby?

Q. If my mom could not breastfeed, does that mean I won’t be able to do it either? Lucy, California.

A. Hi Lucy! Thanks for contacting us. I have good news for you, because the fact that your mother was unable to breastfeed doesn’t mean you won’t be able to do so. Previously, it was believed that some women did not produce milk, and therefore they ceased to breastfeed their babies. However, today we know it’s unlikely for a woman not to produce enough milk, since the main stimulus to produce and secrete milk is the baby’s sucking. The longer you breastfeed, the more milk your body will produce. Consult your doctor or a breastfeeding consultant to learn about appropriate ways to breastfeed. Remember that breast milk is the best food for your baby.
